Fall 2024 Scholastic Book Fair/Save the Seas

Our community purchased more than 2,000 books and earned $8,202 in Scholastic awards for our school. We also collected more than $540 for Share the Fair™, a program which turned the Book Fair donations into books for our school library and Holiday books for the York Street Project.

Our theme Save the Seas sought to promote conservation through the arts.

We showed the students in the Lower School how to re-purpose plastic tablecloths and plastic bottles into jellyfish! If only we could figure out how to turn the pages of our books into biodegradable materials :) Hopefully, we are one step closer to ensuring that our beaches are more “sandy beach” and less “plastic beach.” We look forward to our continued efforts in promoting literacy and environmental awareness–one book (and one less piece of plastic) at a time.

Read something new every day!

Thank you for making our Book Fair the Best. Fair. Ever!

5 tips for choosing books

Children who love to read tend to do better in school. Do let them have a choice! This fosters their love of reading and helps them to develop literacy preferences. You can help them make appropriate choices by asking these questions:

  1. What do you enjoy reading? Do you enjoy books that are funny, scary, fiction or nonfiction? Do you like adventures or biographies?

  2. Does the book cover make you want to know more? Flip through the book to gauge the interest.

  3. Does the topic interest you?

  4. Is the book part of a series?

  5. Are there fewer than five unknown words in the book? If so, it will be suitable for their reading ability.
